Silence

We did not measure sound. We measured its absence.

An anechoic chamber is a room with the echo taken out of it. Metre-long wedges absorb 99.4 % of the energy that reaches them, and sound dies where it was born. Inside, you can hear your own heart working.

Ø1 was designed in one. Eight microphones read the outside field 48 000 times a second, and the onboard processor builds its exact counter-phase in 190 microseconds — faster than the wave reaches the eardrum.

Material

Two hundred and eighty-nine grams with nothing left to remove

Not one screw on the outside. Not one part put there for looks. Three materials, each chosen for one reason — it does not ring.

Each cup is milled from a solid billet of 6063 aluminium — forty-two minutes apiece. The wall varies in thickness: 1.8 mm where stiffness is needed, 0.9 mm where mass is.

Ear pads

Nappa over variable-density memory foam: 60 kg/m³ along the skull line, 28 kg/m³ at the cheekbone. They come off with a 12° twist, no tool and no glue.

Yoke

Grade 5 titanium, ground along the load axis. The hinge sits on a nitrile rubber damper that kills headband vibration before it reaches the driver.

Sound

One driver. No crossover.

The 40-millimetre driver: a champagne-gold diaphragm dome in a graphite basket with radial slots

Forty millimetres, the dome coated with 240 nanometres of beryllium. The first break-up mode sits beyond 44 kilohertz — past the point where sound is still sound. Below that line the diaphragm moves like a piston: no lag, no overtones, no crossover split.

“Salt” finish

Clamping force was set not for an average head but for the worst case: 2.4 newtons — enough to hold the acoustic seal, little enough that you will not think about the headphones for eight hours.
